CRYSTAL RIVER — When Florida’s water turns cold, the manatees come home — and there’s no front-row seat better than Three Sisters Springs.
This cluster of crystal-clear springs in Crystal River is one of the most famous manatee gathering spots in the state. During manatee season in the cooler months, dozens — sometimes hundreds — of gentle giants crowd into the warm spring water, and visitors can watch from the boardwalks or paddle the clear water on kayak tours, including clear-bottom boats that put the view right under your feet.
The water is so clear it barely looks real, and the manatees are in no hurry at all. Bring a camera; wildlife photographers plan whole winters around this place.
A few ground rules: look, don’t touch — manatees are protected, and the springs close areas when the animals need their rest. Follow the posted guidance and you’ll get the best show in Florida nature, free of charge from the boardwalk.
